Meet the developers of NeurOptimal®
VAL BROWN Ph.D.
Valdeane W. Brown, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist. He earned his doctorate (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology from the University of Florida. He also studied mathematics, physics, and theology in his academic career. Val has worked in many areas including psychotherapy, biofeedback, martial arts, and spiritual practice. He became interested in brain training in the 1990s and began studying EEG and neurofeedback.He was board-certified in neurofeedback through the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA).
Over time, he saw the limits of traditional, linear neurofeedback, which often focused on diagnosing and fixing symptoms. Val wanted a system that worked with the brain’s natural ability to change and grow—without forcing it.
He used ideas from dynamical systems theory (a branch of mathematics) to build a new kind of neurofeedback. This became the foundation of NeurOptimal®, a non-linear, fully automated system that gives feedback to the brain based on its own moment-to-moment activity.
SUE BROWN M.A
Susan Cheshire Brown, M.A. holds a Master’s degree in Psychology from the University of Ottawa. She is trained as a therapist and has worked in the fields of psychology, wellness, and personal development. Sue has a strong interest in the emotional and transformational side of brain training.
She helped shape NeurOptimal® into a system that feels warm, supportive, and easy to use—even for people who have never tried brain training before.
While Val focused on the scientific and technical side, Sue focused on making the system practical for families, professionals, and individuals. She also helped design the training programs used to teach people how to use NeurOptimal® at home or in their work.
For more than 25 years, Val and Sue have worked to make NeurOptimal® as safe, natural, and accessible as possible. Their work continues to influence the field of brain training and personal transformation.
